Thank you very much, Chris and the Woods family for coming to help with the Schools League event and then staying on to run. Thank you, Bob, who started early and came back twice; once for a vandalised control and a second time to dispute the position of 113 (the spring). Later runners were unhappy with my rehung control! I agree with Bob that the spring has been mapped in the re-entrant and with Julia that it is not actually in the re-entrant. My geomorphological consultant (Ron) reckons that springs are seasonal and can move around with time and are not generally found in re-entrants. The spring is active at the moment and is correctly mapped with respect to the small depression and probably to a bearing from the path/track junction to the SW but not wrt the re-entrant. I went back to check the pit and knoll in the SW corner of the map and I agree with you Hally that I was some 10m out in the placing - I did hang the control high, however! Many of the platforms in Ampthill are formed by little landslips and apparently change with time. The rhododendrons have, unfortunately, extended greatly. Time for a new map - I promise that Ampthill will now be re-mapped (Leo has offered to help, which is great) so that future events can be planned on an up-to-date map. Ursula |
