Rain Stopped Play. Well, not exactly, but it certainly inhibited the performance and enjoyment of the evening's experience. Hardly 15 minutes into the start times and the heaven's opened and deluged the area for a good 30 minutes. Not surprisingly some people opted to call it a day when already drenched. However, many persisted and claimed they enjoyed it. So now you know, it's official, orienteering is a masochist's sport. I think that all those who came along and performed should be awarded double points for their persistence and hardiness - not knowing how points are now awarded. I have to thank both Marcus and Lindsey for their endurance in going out to recover most of the controls for me when both were already drenched. As much of the paperwork on which control codes were recorded was returned to me in papier mache form I have decided that all participants 'must' have visited all the controls correctly. Well done all. And a very special mention made of Milton Cunha who came all the way from Brazil especially for this event!! I hope he wasn't too disappointed. Also a special mention of Ian Jones, late of this parish, who came all the way from Wales for this event. Also a 'Welcome Home' to Peter Duthie, who has forced himself back up the country from a year's exile in Cornwall. This just shows how popular Portholme, England's largest meadow, really is!! Hally |
