Contact: WAOC Webmaster Planner's CommentsI was pleased to take up Ursula's offer to plan Mildenhall Wood 2007 but on my first visit to the forest was dismayed to find swathes of new undergrowth and areas decimated by recent felling. I found the all too pervasive nettles particularly virulent in September but fortunately they were less 'lively' on the day. After his own reconnaissance, John reassured me that there was sufficient scope for a good event and most competitors' feedback at the event reaffirmed this. To the few runners who were disappointed with specific aspects of the map - now due a major overhaul - I offer my apologies. My driving goal was to keep everyone, especially the juniors, as much as possible in the feature-rich southwest block of the map. This meant using the Picnic Area car park to avoid young juniors crossing the minor fast road through the forest. Unusually the car park exceeded its capacity and caused some inconvenience - it had coped well at the Thetford Thrash 2005 regional event and so we didn't anticipate problems. To achieve my goal I used more controls than normal on some courses. This seemed to be particularly successful on Light Green where the navigation challenge was sustained by many short legs with frequent direction changes. Some junior runners found the Yellow course a little too easy but I had decided to err on the side of caution. Fortunately, John persuaded me to increase the navigational challenge on the Orange course which I hope also gave everyone - including the YBT competitors - an enjoyable challenge. The longer and physical Blue and Brown courses seemed well received but with hindsight I concede that the leg from control 158 (Tripod) to 151 (Gully) went through a section of 'rough open' that was in places more of a 'fight'. I hope this didn't detract too much from the rest of either course. My special thanks are due to John for his expert guidance, kind support and many painstaking hours of checking all my handiwork. I'm also grateful for the SI mentoring from Bruce Marshall and the map production work from Neil Humphries. It was a pleasure to work with Peter and Karen Heybrock on the critically important organisation - including booking the fabulous weather. Finally, I thank you the competitors for running my courses. Tim Mulcahy (WAOC) Controller's CommentsWhen Tim first contacted me with his worries about the map, I spent a day updating it to reflect the major changes. Unfortunately, this and subsequent visits for controlling were insufficient to cover everything, hence a few mistakes like the gorse bushes on the Blue course escaping my notice. I take full responsibility for them! Tim's courses made excellent use of the terrain, and his unusually high number of controls on the Light Green would be a good example for other planners to follow. I realised the Yellow would be a little too easy, but options which appeared possible on the map were not really suitable on the ground. The only seriously-made complaint concerned No. 1 on the Green course, but when we checked the map there was no way this could be upheld. Almost everyone I spoke to enjoyed the event, a tribute to the hard work Tim had put in on the course planning, Neil on the printing, Karen and Peter on organising, and the support they had been given by many WAOC members.
