Thanks for coming, all 16 of you. Especially to Maurice Capper, sent by Mike to ensure the job was done well enough. Maurice is perhaps our oldest Member, in more senses than one, being almost an original from 1972/73. And still going strong as a 75+ year old. He was the only one to tackle the shorter 2km course, and for some reason objected to copying the letters from the two non-cup controls, but I bet he went to them. Dai Wilson was the quickest on the longer course, and seemed to have no difficulty with any of it - at least that he was prepared to talk about. He didn't even seem to be scratched. I didn't ask him how he managed to avoid that - could have learnt a few tips! For those who wish to know more: The first event on this patch was last September on an interim map. I have been able to add and amend quite a bit over this winter, being able to see the detail. The Peterborough CC are doing continuous work in the area and it is becoming much more accessible (Honest!). My apologies to those having a problem at control 1 (on the longer course). Yes, the bank isn't right, and I've amended the map somewhat now, but it's still not 'there'. I challenge any of you, who had a grumble, to correct it. Those who felt the pit, 26 penultimate control, was wrong, because they were judging the position against what you saw as 'fight'. I have re-measured (umpteenth time) & am happy with the location. And the vegetation at this point was seen as 'scattered trees in rough open'. It's quite easy to get through the trees at this point. I have, however, changed the map to have a light green touch beside the fight. For all who have map interpretation problems, well so do mappers - and the vegetation does keep changing and quite rapidly at this time of year, sometimes dramatically, even within 3 months. To those who grumble may I suggest that you join Peter Duthie on the mappers' course - and help the Club produce the maps that YOU wish to see. WAOC has precious few mappers, and even fewer who get out and do it. I'm a novice at this game myself - having done it only since 1972, so I need you to help as well. Anyone who has done a fair amount of orienteering, and can wield a computer mouse, can easily master a re-map of any of our areas - mostly vegetation and small path amendments. Regards Hally Hardie |
