Terrain and map details

Map

Course maps are A4 size, printed on waterproof paper. Map is at 1:10000 scale. Control descriptions are on the map and loose control descriptions will be in the start lanes.

Terrain

Mildenhall South is a mixture of open heathland with contour features, and forest blocks of differing maturity and runnability.

Please note that the heathland is an important wildlife habitat.  The heath area shall only be entered by the stile or gate and fences bordering the heath shall not be crossed.  Future access to this area for orienteering depends on all of us following this guidance.

Please also note that there could be livestock loose on the heath.

Clothing and footwear:

Long sleeved tops are advisable and trousers giving full leg cover is compulsory. You are advised to carry a whistle. Please ensure your clothing is appropriate for the time of year.

Safety:

  • Please do not go into any area marked as Out of Bounds, indicated on the map by either solid olive colour, or vertical purple stripes or cross hatching.
  • The wood is open to the public and you may meet dog walkers and others.  Please give plenty of room when passing.
  • Biosafety- please clean shoes before the event to avoid spread of plant-based diseases.
  • The forest is bounded to the North by the A11 dual carriageway and to the South by the A1101.  Keep away from roads and on no account run along the road.

You take part in this event at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety.

You MUST report to download, even if you retire.

Dog restrictions

Dogs are permitted as long as kept on a lead.

Facilities: Portable toilets will be provided at the event.

Results: Results will be posted on the WAOC website shortly after the event.
