Summary

Welcome to Santon Downham for WAOC’s final Regional event of the year, deep into Thetford Forest.

This event includes the EAOA Championships and is part of the East Anglian League.

This area was last used in 2022 (as Bromehill and Santon Warren).

East Anglian Orienteering Championships

WAOC are delighted to be hosting this years East Anglian Orienteering Championships. Everyone is welcome to participate, but only EAOA members are eligible to become East Anglian Orienteering Champions.

Eligibility comprises all current members of NOR, SOS, SMOC, SUFFOC, WAOC, CUOC and DRONGO as well as those members of RAFO, BAOC, RNOC and HAVOC whose individual regional affiliation is to EAOA.

If your entry for some reason specifies a different club, but you feel you should be eligible then you MUST contact the organiser before starting your run.

The championship classes are age-based; entries are by course: please see the table below. To be eligible you must run the correct course for your age group. Running-up is only permissible to the Open class (ie Brown course for both M+W). *Please note that championship courses for M75/W70 and upwards are still to be confirmed. Please check with the organiser on the day that you are running the correct class for your age group.

Full rules are here.

If you have a trophy from last year, then please ensure it is engraved and is brought to the event, if you have not already handed it back.
We will endeavour to hold this year’s Trophy Presentation from 1.30pm.

Terrain

Bromehill features a 40 m forest-covered hill. Terrain is largely managed forest intersected by mostly well-defined paths.
Varying degrees of runnability throughout: runnable deciduous sections, dense slow-running evergreen with openings, and tall pine trees hosting various types of undergrowth.

The western slopes have heavy bracken coverage, and the upper sections contain patches of thicket and brambles.

Vegetation clearing has created open areas splitting forest sections, though many are now overgrown with bracken.
Earth features, such as depressions and pits, are concentrated in the western area, with several deeper holes near the top.

All maps will be printed on waterproof paper and will include control descriptions.

There will be loose control descriptions in the lanes. White and Yellow courses will have textual control descriptions only. Orange course will have combined text and pictorial control descriptions. All other courses will have pictorial descriptions only.

The start is 250m from assembly, with the finish 150m from assembly.

When you finish, please follow the taped route back to download.

Facilities

No water or drinks will be provided - please bring your own.
A First aid box will be located in the download tent.

Nearest hospital is West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 2QZ.

A portable toilet will be available at the event site.

Cakes!

The East Anglian Junior Squad will be putting on a Cake Stall - please support them by bringing lots of change.

Results: The results from this event will be published online as soon as possible, see www.waoc.org.uk/results

Directions / Parking

Postcode: IP27 0RB (close but not exact)
What3words: army.confronts.squares
Grid reference: TL793889

By car:

IP27 0RB should bring you to slightly north of the event site, but may not work in all satnavs. The entrance is on forest road 24 on the A1065 Mundford Road, about 2 miles North of Brandon; 3 miles South of Mundford.

You must approach the event from the A1065. If your Satnav tells you that you can access the area from the east, ignore it.

The entrance is on the East side of the road - look for the O signs.
This is a fast, busy road, so please take take care with the turning (particularly the right turn if coming from the Brandon side).

Marshalls will direct you to parking and assembly. If you are planning to arrive by coach you must contact the organiser in advance.

By public transport: Brandon Station is on the Breckland line between Cambridge and Norwich. It is just over a mile from the event site. But note that this is a quite a fast road without pavements - so possibly not for the faint-hearted. Stay on the verge on the right hand side.

Important Event Information

Safety and Risk: A risk assessment is carried out by the organiser in advance of each event, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

Insurance: Our events and activities are registered with British Orienteering, and have been risk-assessed. Our event officials have appropriate training for the level of event involved. This means our events are covered by British Orienteering's public liability insurance. For insurance purposes, we ask that when you register for an event that you provide full names of anyone who goes out on a course, even if just accompanying a junior or part of a group (these additional names won't be recorded in the results - for example they can just be noted on the back of your registration slip).

Please note: By entering an event, you acknowledge that you are taking part at your own risk. From 1st January 2026 onwards, participants who are not members of British Orienteering are not covered by British Orienteering’s public liability insurance. If you are not a member of British Orienteering and were to, for example, accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered.

Privacy:

WAOC process entrant information on the basis of legitimate interest to produce competition results, to provide participation and results information to British Orienteering, and we retain details for a period to meet our insurance requirements. Published results may include (but not limited to) name, any club affiliation, race times and age group. Read our data protection page for further information about how we look after your personal information.

Welfare and Safeguarding:

We want everyone to feel safe and welcome at our events.

If you would like special assistance, such as a quiet start or other request, please do let us know. Ideally by contacting the organiser in advance, otherwise ask on the day and we will help if we can.

As a club, we support and follow British Orienteering’s safeguarding policies, which can be found via the links below:

We also have our own child welfare policy. See also our Safeguarding and Welfare page.

Taking Photographs

In line with the policies of British Orienteering, the organisers of this event request that any person wishing to take photos or videos showing children should register their details with event volunteers before taking any such photos or videos. The event organisers reserve the right to ask people to refrain from taking photos or videos and may, if such warnings are ignored, refer the matter to the police.

Club's use of Images

We may sometimes publish photographs of event participants in news items or publicity. At events where we have arranged for photography we will advertise this at the event and in advance in the event details.

We aim always to obtain the permissions of parent or responsible adult before we publish any picture showing a junior participant as the main focus. Although we cannot guarantee that an event photographer will not take photographs of any given individual, we will do our best to avoid publishing images of individuals who have told us they do not wish to be photographed and will remove images that we are notified about.

Read our data protection page for further information about our policy on photography and use of images.
