Congratulations to Duncan Coombs, who achieved a podium place and won a Bronze Medal competing as an M21 Elite at the British Long Distance Championships which took place in Kilnsey in the Yorkshire Dales on May 5th.

There is a short article on the British Orienteering website, written by Tim Herod, about his experience helping at a recent Park-O event. You can read the article here:

A number of club members enjoyed taking part in the 2019 Midland Championships at Brown Clee Hill, Shropshire on Sunday 26 May. But it was only the WAOC Juniors who were able to successfully navigate their challenging courses well enough to win the W12 and M16 Midlands Championship Trophies. Congratulations to both of them.
Congratulations to Andrew, who was the highest scoring GB competitor in the TempO at the JK this year, at his first attempt, and was also well placed in the PreO.

We are delighted to reveal that WAOC has been awarded a substantial grant by Sport England, to develop our Park-O series, aimed at introducing youngsters (and their parents) to the sport.
This will build on the success of our pilot Park-O events, some of which have attracted well over 100 participants, most of whom are new to the sport.
The grant will support a programme of monthly Park-O events in Cambridge from now until the end of the school summer term in 2020. We are already seeing really good turnout from local schools and the grant will allow us to set up a schools league, where runners can earn points for their school at each event they take part in.
The next Park-O is at Wimpole Hall Estate on 15th June, after which we will take a summer break with the new series beginning in September.

This will be our inaugural MapRun event. Please bring a GPS-enabled smartphone (Android or Apple) with you.
For full details, please see the Bar HIll event page.
Congratulations to Noreen Ives, our club treasurer, who was class winner in W65S in the Middle Distance Race (Day 2) at this year's JK, and to Ursula who was 2nd on W85. On Day 3 (Long distance), James Haynes came 2nd in the M21S class, Duncan Coombs was 4th in the M21 Elite race and Chloe Haines was placed 5th in the W21 Elites.

New for 2019 - The East Anglian Region is setting up an urban league. This will work in a similar way to the EA League which generally involves cross country orienteering events.
Members of all EAOA clubs will be awarded points at nominated urban events in the region. The league will recognise the highest scoring runners in each category. Full details can be viewed on the EAOA website, but be aware that the first EAUL event of 2019 will be our Royston event on 10th March.
Proposed fixtures for 2019 are:

The winners of the 2018 East Anglian League received their trophies at Bush Heath yesterday. Photos of those present to receive their trophies can be found below (Peter was both the giver and a receiver!).
As well as those in the photos, congratulations to Hebe Darwin (W12), Janet Cronk (W60) and Dil Wetherill (M50).
Here is a link to the EAOA junior squad website, which now has videos from the 2018 Laganlia summer training camp in Scotland, and a report from Barney, an East Anglian junior who took part.
Congratulations to the following club members who topped the league tables for their age class in the East Anglian League.
Full results can be found here. Prizes will be given out at Bush Heath on 3rd February.
Last year, Sport England worked with South London Orienteers in a project to help teenagers develop their orienteering skills. As part of this project, a series of eight short videos have been produced presented by athletes from the GB Orienteering team.
The videos are filmed in different locations and the aim is to help juniors deal with more technically demanding courses, but they can also be used by newcomers wanting to “get up to speed”. Each video focuses on a specific orienteering skill.
To begin with, here's Graham Gristwood's Newcomer's Guide. Graham has 13 Senior British Championship Gold medals.

Alex Wetherill, our Junior Team Captain, has been selected to run for England in the Interland International orienteering competition to be held in Ardennes in France, in March 2019.
Alex is one of three M16s selected for the England team which made up of a broad mix of age groups – from M/W14 to M/W60. Alex qualified by finishing 3rd, 3rd and 1st respectively in selection races held in the Autumn of last year at Formby sand dunes, the North Yorkshire Moors, and in Epping Forest.
The photo shows Alex coming in to the finish at the 2018 inter-regional championships, wearing East Anglian regional strip.
The Wagal Scoreboard for 2018 is now final, with points awarded for the Rowney Warren event on 25th November now included.
The WAGAL Champions for 2018 are:

At our ParkO event at Wandlebury on 10th November, we were finally able to present our nominated charity, Headway Cambridgeshire, with the proceeds from our St Neots sprint event held earlier in the year.
The cheque was presented by the club's former chairperson, Peter Woods, and acccepted by Kate Ward on behalf of Headway Cambridgeshire. Luckily, given that the handover was in the open air in the parkland of Wandelbury Country Park, we managed to do this before an unexpected rainstorm came along later in the afternoon!
